Rebellion, destruction, and rock ‘n’ roll, baby! In March of 1982, Iron Maiden released their third studio album, The Number of the Beast, and it took the music industry by storm. “Reckon the number of the beast / For it is a human number / Its number is six hundred and sixty six.” Those lyrics from the title track will forever be synonymous with heavy metal music.
This episode of Classic Albums tells the story behind how The Number of the Beast propelled Iron Maiden into heavy metal superstars and came to be an extraordinary album. The Number of the Beast was the English heavy metal band’s first album to reach The Top 40 of the Billboard 200 in the U.S. Their new-found mainstream success brought about a lot of criticism from those opposed to the album’s controversial lyrics and satanic cover art.
Watch exclusive interviews with the entire band as they give their own take on the controversies surrounding their first commercially successful album. Drummer Clive Burr gives his first interview in many years following his departure from the band after their “Beast on the Road World Tour.” Discover more about what made this heavy metal album so special in the network premiere of Classic Albums: Iron Maiden – The Number of the Beast Wednesday, February 14th at 9/8c on AXS TV.
