Against a backdrop of Thatcher’s Britain with riots, record unemployment, and a conflict with Argentina over the Falkland Islands, Duran Duran released Rio, the follow-up to their self-titled début album. This optimistic and celebratory recording became one of the most acclaimed and enduring albums of the 1980s. While the band had tasted success with their first album, it was Rio that would catapult them to global stardom. The album ultimately went on to sell in excess of 10 million copies worldwide and became the cornerstone in the career of a ground-breaking band. This week on Classic Albums, we’re hitting the studio with Duran Duran to discover the process behind creating Rio. In this special sneak peek, they discuss how lead vocalist, Simon Le Bon, was able to write lyrics that would help to uplift audiences. He would then record them and harmonize with himself to perfect the lush and full sound of his voice. Learn more about the album and the creation of it with Classic Albums on Wednesday, October 23rd at 9/8c on AXS TV!
