As far as 90s music in the UK is concerned, it doesn’t get more quintessential than Simply Red’s best selling album, Stars. With five Top 40 singles released from the album, including “Something Got Me Started,” the title track, “For Your Babies,” “Your Mirror,” and “Freedom,” Stars became one of the biggest albums in British music history.
In this clip of Classic Albums, Simply Red frontman Mick Hucknall and his fellow band members analyze their widely successful, twelve times platinum album. Hucknall alludes to his simplistic writing process when he says, “I used to sit at home with an acoustic guitar and a Sony Walkman, and I would write the songs that way. I wrote the songs that way all the way through the Stars album.” We also hear from Simply Red keyboardist, Frtiz McIntyre, and saxophonist, Ian Kirkham, as they both discuss the band’s studio collaboration in recording Stars. Simply Red’s producer on the album, Stewart Levine, praises Hucknall’s songwriting: he remarks, “Some of these songs were just great. You could tell right away that they were going to be great records.”
