Sneak Peek | Classic Albums: The Band

The Band’s self-titled album, aka The Brown Album, is regarded as one of the best albums of all time. It features a number of critically acclaimed songs, including “The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down” and “Rag Mama Rag.” Though a Canadian, Robbie Robertson wrote songs for the album that were based on examples of America’s pastime. It brings with it a rush of American nostalgia and a craving for a simpler time.

This sneak peek of Classic Albums examines The Band’s mixture of musical genres brought together to create a new, unique sound on their iconic second album. Watch archival footage of Eric Clapton and George Harrison discussing the album’s complexity. We also hear from The Band’s Robbie Robertson and Levon Helm both talking about how they were perceived by others, and what they thought defined them as a band.
