Saturday marks the annual celebration known as 4/20 and AXS TV will be at Red Rocks Amphitheater for a SOLD OUT performance from Cypress Hill and Slightly Stoopid. Whether you are celebrating or not, there’s no denying that there are A LOT of great songs to listen to on such an occasion. We decided to whip up a list of the Top Ten Songs You SHOULD Be Listening to on 4/20.
(Keep in Mind just about any song from Grateful Dead, Phish and Pink Floyd can be substituted or added to this list)
10. Snoop Dogg – “Gin and Juice”
Snoop is a no brainer for this list, after all he is a Rastafari now and what song could be better than song about partying and drinking all night?
Rollin down the street, smokin indo, sippin on gin and juice. Laid back (with my mind on my money and my money on my mind)
9. 311 – “Who’s Got the Herb?”
Who knew some dudes from Omaha, Nebraska could make such great reggae music?
Who’s got the herb is what the young boys ask me. Who’s got the herb and then elders tell me. Who’s got the herb is what the young girls ask me. Whos’ got the herb not thee dread-locks
8. Black Sabbath – “Sweet Leaf”
Of course Black Sabbath’s hymn to pot makes the list, the song even begins with Tony Iommi coughing!
My life is free now, my life is clear. I love you sweet leaf, though you can’t hear
7. Slightly Stoopid – “Officer”
It’s no secret the guys of Slightly Stoopid are pot advocates, I mean they are playing Red Rocks on 4/20… There are plenty of songs by the band to choose from but you can’t go wrong with a good party song.
It all started late on a saturday night, Said who’s got the spliffs and who’s got the pint?
6. Rick James – “Mary Jane”
He might be more well known for saying “Cocaine is a hell of a drug” on Chappelle’s Show but Rick James sang about miss “Mary Jane” in 1978 and when your song lands on the soundtracks to Friday AND Harold and Kumar, you’ve definitely made a a great 4/20 song.
I’m in love with Mary Jane. She’s my main thing. She makes me feel alright. She makes my heart sing.
5. Method Man – “4:20”
How can you NOT put a song called “4:20” on the list, especially when it’s performed by a guy who starred in a movie called How High?
It’s 4:20, roll up, n**** getting smo-ked out. No seeds, California weed have you choked out. No doubt, roll up, which rims spoked out. 4:20 mean you either roll up or roll out
4. Cypress Hill – “Hits From the Bong”
The title and sound effects pretty much say it all and the fact that they sample Dusty Springfield’s “Son of a Preacher Man” is just a bonus!
Still it, goes down smooth when I get a clean hit, Of the skunky funky smelly green s*** Sing my song, puff all night long As I take Hits from the bong…
3. Bob Marley – “Kaya”
We would have to be well… High not to put Bob on the list. Like many of the other artists on here, there are a lot of songs about weed to choose from but even the title of this song is a term for marijuana…
I’m so high, I even touch the sky. Above the falling rain. I feel so good in my neighbourhood, so Here I come again. Got to have kaya now
2. Sublime – “Smoke 2 Joints”
Originally performed by The Toyes, Sublime turned the song into a mainstream hit in the 90’s and you can’t really put a “Top 4/20 List” together without this catchy tune.
I smoke two joints in the morning, I smoke two joints at night. I smoke two joints in the afternoon, It makes me feel all right.
1. Afroman – “Because I Got High”
I wasn’t gonna run from the cops but I was high. I was gonna pull right over and stop but I was high. Now I’m a paraplegic and I know why? Because I got high, because I got high, because I got high
