Rock Legends: Little Richard | Premieres December 18th

Rock to the East, rock to the West!

This Tuesday, Rock Legends is featuring the so-called pioneer of rock & roll during the era of new wave music, Little Richard. Born Richard Wayne Penniman, Little Richard was raised by a very religious family who was heavily involved in the Baptist church. His father was a deacon, but also sold moonshine and was a club owner on the side. Little Richard got his start singing and playing the saxophone in the church, and at the age of 14 was discovered by the female gospel singer, Sister Rosetta Tharpe outside the Macon City Auditorium where she was scheduled to perform. Sister Rosetta Tharpe invited Little Richard to join her in song on stage, and from then on Little Richard fell in love with performing as well as entertainment. Little Richard is most known for his risque song "Tutti Frutti," which was cleaned up before it's release in November of 1955. "Tutti Frutti" became an instant hit, reaching No. 2 on Billboard magazine's Rhythm and Blues Best-Sellers. He was also recognized for his songs "Lucile," "Long Tall Sally," "Slippin' and Slidin'," and more 1950s rock & roll classics that he performed. To learn more about this charismatic and timeless artist, watch Rock Legends at 8/7c on Tuesday, December 18th on AXS TV!
