Marvin Gaye | Rock Legends on November 20th

The Unforgotten Prince of Soul Music

This Tuesday, Rock Legends is featuring the American singer, songwriter, and record producer, Marvin Gaye! Born in 1939, in Washington, D.C., Gaye sang in his father’s church and in The Marquees turned Moonglows under the direction of Harvey Faqua before signing with Motown in 1960. Not only was he a star on his own, but Gaye performed a series of duets that are some of the most recognizable songs in duet history. Songs such as "Once Upon a Time" with Mary Well, "It Takes Two" with Kim Weston, and "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" with Tammi Terrel, just to name a few, are legendary in their own right. In 1971, Gaye released the album What's Going On, which leader of Motown, Barry Gordy, initially refused to release due to the songs' political appeal. Following the success of "What's Going On," the song that defined Marvin Gaye as a pure sensual, soul artist is "Let's Get It On." This particular song reached the No. 1 single on the Hot 100, selling over three million copies. In 1984, Gaye's life was cut short when he was tragically killed during a domestic dispute with his father. Learn more about his intriguing story on the all-new episode of Rock Legends premiering on Tuesday, November 20th at 8/7c!
