The First MTV VMAs | A Year in Music: 1984

Madonna’s show-stopping performance & how MJ got snubbed

This week on A Year in Music, we’re guided back to 1984: a pivotal year for pop music & the inaugural MTV Video Music Awards. Who better to tell us about it than one of MTV’s legendary albums, Downtown Julie Brown? She’ll take us back to the 80s and fill us in on how this major event changed music forever. Madonna stole the show with her wedding dress/bustier combination and a 17 foot wedding cake. While some deemed her performance too sexy, it set the stage for female artists for years to come. Meanwhile, Michael Jackson made one of the most iconic music videos of all time, however he somehow lost out on Video of the Year to the Cars. Regardless, his video set the new standard and the VMAs gave musicians a platform to create a brand. Learn more about this year in music with the sneak peek above, then set your DVR for the full episode THURSDAY at 8:30/7:30c on AXS TV!
