Black Friday 2019 | Record Store Day Buying Guide

You could spend the day fighting for a deal on electronics or buy some awesome music instead

Forget standing in line at 3am to score a TV for an incredible low price, this year we’re spending Black Friday shopping for rare releases courtesy of Record Store Day. Similar to the traditional Record Store Day in April, this Black Friday will feature limited quantities of vinyl made especially for the day. According to Record Store Day themselves, they’re trying to shift the perception of Black Friday as a “mass-produced, low as you can go event,” into a celebration of the record store with “a list of special releases that highlight how great gifts from a record store can be, and celebrating the kick-off of the holiday rush at independently owned neighborhood businesses.” This year, the list of participating artists for Record Store Black Friday includes U2, Eric Clapton, Alice Cooper, Sammy Hagar, and many, many more. You can check out the full list of releases on their website, but we’ve taken the liberty of going through the list for you and picking a few of our favorites below.

Bad Company – Live at Red Rocks

We might be slightly biased here, seeing as we filmed this incredible show, but one of our must haves is this album capturing Bad Company’s live Red Rocks show from May of 2016. The show is being brought back to life via vinyl with this very limited pressing of only 1,500 units. Of course, if you don’t snag one of these albums, you can always watch the concert on AXS TV.

Sammy Hagar – Santa’s Going South for Christmas

We’re always ready to purchase any piece of music created by the Red Rocker, including this limited-edition picture disc. He teamed up with country superstar Toby Keith in 2011 for “Santa’s Going South”, but now the holiday track is getting its vinyl debut. On the B-Side of the album, there will also be a never before released live version of “Eagle’s Fly”.

Eric Clapton – Home for the Holidays/For Love on Christmas Day

Speaking of holiday songs from our favorite rockers, the guitar legend himself, Slowhands is releasing 1,500 copies of 12″ vinyl featuring two tracks from his 2018 album, Happy X-Mas.

The Doors – Live at the Isle of Wight Festival (1970)

The Isle of Wight Festival in 1970 was the final concert The Doors performed as a group of four outside of the United States. For the first time, the legendary performance is coming to vinyl and includes the live renditions of some of their biggest songs including “Roadhouse Blues”, “Break On Through (To The Other Side)”, “Light My Fire” and “The End”.

Cheap Trick – Gimme Some Truth

One side of this limited-edition red 7″ single features a live rendition of Cheap Trick’s now-iconic “I Wish It Could Be Christmas Every Day”, the other has a cover of John Lennon’s “Gimme Some Truth”. Cheap Trick will also be releasing Are You Ready Or Not?, a live recording of their show on December 31, 1979, at The Forum in Los Angeles.

The Monkees – Christmas Party Plus!

Get your Christmas party started with this single set from The Monkees. Featuring one red and one green 7″ vinyl in a gatefold sleeve, this special release features the tracks “Unwrap You At Christmas”, “Riu Chiu”, and “Christmas is My Time of Year”.

Alice Cooper – Billion Dollar Babies

You may own the deluxe CD version of this incredible live show, but you can add it to your vinyl collection. Recorded live on April 28th, 1973 at the Sam Houston Coliseum in Houston, this concert features live renditions of the Alice Cooper tracks you know and love including “No More Mr. Nice Guy” and “School’s Out”. Cooper will also be releasing his 15th solo album, Dragontown, on limited-edition colored vinyl for the first time.

Dio – Rainbow in the Dark

While we are excited to hear these songs on vinyl for the first time, we might be more excited to hang this incredible dragon picture disc on our wall. This 12″ features a special live version of “Rainbow in the Dark”, which was recored in 2002, and “Killing the Dragon”.

Jimi Hendrix – Merry Christmas and Happy New Year

Nothing says “Happy Holidays” quite like Jimi Hendrix dressed up like Santa Claus. This 12″ picture disc highlights a special medley of holiday favorites that Jimi and his Band of Gypsys prepared for their highly anticipated appearances at The Fillmore East in New York in December of 1969. While you may already have these songs in your vinyl collection, this special Record Store Day exclusive is the only time you’ll be able to get them on this very festive picture disk.

Sid Vicious – Sid Lives!

You can keep this 2LP multi-coloured vinyl for yourself or you could gift it to the biggest Sid Vicious fan you know. The special album also includes a 2CD version of the 39 tracks on the LPs as well as a 24 page booklet with stories about the Sex Pistol’s legend, or in other words it is “the definitive Sid Vicious release for all fans and students of the punk-rock scene.”
