▶ Stars Will Reach Out LIVE to Supporters like YOU from the On-Stage Digital Lounge Hosted by Katie Couric
Since being founded in 2008, the non-profit organization Stand Up 2 Cancer (SU2C) has raised millions of dollars to fund cancer research, thanks in part to three very successful fundraising telecasts. And on Friday, September 5 at 8 ET|5 PT, SU2C returns to TV for their biggest all-star special yet – featuring performances from music legends and testimonials from film and TV stars – to build public support for SU2C’s groundbreaking translational research that can provide patients with new therapies to save lives now.
Instead of the traditional phone bank, the September 5th event, hosted by Katie Couric, will feature stars in the digital lounge reaching out to viewers via phone, Facebook, Instagram and other social media platforms through an exciting new campaign called “We’re Calling You.” (SIGN UP NOW!) Katie will also tap into the Facebook Mentions Box, which allows viewers to share their connection to cancer and receive real-time responses from celebrities. Other celebrities in the digital lounge will participate in Facebook Q&As, using their own pages to respond live to fan questions. Plus, Facebook and Instagram will have the best shots from the star-studded red carpet. All of this, and much more, can be followed on Stand Up To Cancer’s social media feeds (Facebook; Twitter; Instagram).
Gwyneth Paltrow is returning as Executive Producer of the telecast, which will be simultaneously aired on many networks – and AXS TV could not be prouder to donate one hour of commercial-free primetime for the premiere. “Cancer profoundly touched my life when I lost my father to the disease 12 years ago,” said Paltrow, “and Stand Up To Cancer gives me a powerful platform to fight for a cause that I’m passionate about.”
SU2C co-founder Katie Couric, whose first husband died after battling colon cancer, explained the background of the organization in a statement. “When we launched Stand Up To Cancer, our goal was to approach the struggle against cancer in a different way. Just six years into this movement, the incredible generosity of our donors—of every level—has enabled major progress in developing new treatments,” said Couric. “This program offers a unique opportunity to share the story of our progress and to remind viewers that each and every individual can play a role in supporting these scientists and their tireless work on behalf of patients.”
To date, more than $261 million has been pledged to support SU2C’s innovative cancer research programs. Since 2008, SU2C has funded 12 “Dream Teams” of researchers and two translational research teams, as well as 26 young innovative scientists whose high-risk, potentially high-reward projects are aimed at ending cancer’s reign as a leading cause of death worldwide. SU2C was founded on the belief that collaboration would play an integral role in advancing cancer research. To date, Stand Up To Cancer has brought together more than 750 of the best and the brightest research scientists from 112 institutions in six countries to work together in order to save lives now. SU2C-funded researchers have planned, launched or completed more than 140 clinical trials.
