Amy Winehouse “Back to Black” | Docs That Rock

Where did Amy Winehouse find her inspiration?

This Tuesday, we’ve got a backstage pass to Amy Winehouse’s life and career! Winehouse soared to success following the release her album Back to Black. This album led to five 2008 Grammy® Awards, tying the then record for the most wins by a female artist in a single night! This also made her the first British woman to win five Grammys®, including three of the General Field “Big Four” Grammy® Awards: Best New Artist, Record of the Year, and Song of the Year.

In Back to Black, producers Mark Ronson and Salaam Remi, mix engineer Tom Elmhirst, and studio musicians from the Dap-Kings listen back to the songs and recall memories of the writing and recording sessions. The accounts are often paired with intimate footage of Winehouse creating and singing in the studio, as well as close-ups of her handwritten lyrics. Winehouse reveals in the film that on her time off she’d play pool all day in the pub and listen to doo-wop and ’60s Motown girl groups on the jukebox, which influenced her. In this sneak peek, Amy Winehouse reveals where she found inspiration, her songwriting process, and more! Watch Amy Winehouse: Back to Black as part of our True Story Tuesdays on Tuesday, April 23rd at 9/8c only on AXS TV.
