For nearly 30 years, satellite images have told the story of the Arctic: the ice cap that sits atop the world is shrinking rapidly due to global warming. Melting ice has unlocked the Northwest Passage between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, which has created an open water route that could shave thousands of miles off traditional shipping routes from Europe to Asia.
