How Kansas Wrote “Leftoverture”

The album MIGHT have been “thrown together” piece by piece

When working on Leftoverture, Kansas struggled with a severe case of writer’s block. So, it was up to guitarist Kerry Livgren to pick up the slack and write most of the songs for the album. Every day he would come into the studio with new songs that would just “come to him” and throw together in the middle of the night, which left some of the other members equal parts amazed and confused. Hear how the band was able to work through the complications and put together the platinum-selling album piece by piece in this Docs That Rock sneak peek!

Miracles Out of Nowhere tells the uplifting true story of the classic rock band Kansas. From impossible obscurity to becoming stadium headliners, this documentary follows the entire career of the multi-platinum and legendary band. Directed by Emmy-nominated Charley Randazzo, this film features the original Kansas lineup reuniting for the first time in 30 years in Topeka where they were first discovered. Go on a journey with the band from the miraculous ride in their gutted school bus, to signing with music mogul Don Kirshner, to touring with Queen. This rockumentary also includes harrowing tales of the fights with Steven Tyler and recording some of the biggest albums and songs of their era that eventually led them to global super-stardom. Miracles Out of Nowhere also features interviews with country music icon Garth Brooks, legendary Queen guitarist Brian May, acclaimed producer Brendan O’Brien, Rolling Stone journalist David Wild, and more.
