Don McLean on the Impact of American Pie | The Big Interview

This is how he wrote a song that became an iconic rock anthem

“American Pie” is so incredible, the original recording was selected for preservation in the National Recording Registry by the Library of Congress as being “culturally, historically, or artistically significant”. Released in 1971, the track hit the top of the charts in several countries all across the world. While some may think of it as a simple classic rock sing-a-long, it’s much more than that. It’s part children’s song, part anthem, and just obscure enough to make people really question its meaning. This week on The Big Interview Dan Rather is sitting down with the man who wrote the song, Don McLean, to find out how he wrote the masterpiece. Get a sneak peek above and learn more with the full episode this Wednesday, May 20th at 8/7c!
