They say the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. That’s certainly the case with Jason Bonham, son of the legendary Led Zeppelin drummer, John Bonham! Jason is as much of a natural drummer as his father, and coupled with his name, it was clear he was destined for greatness!
It seems like Jason would have no choice but to follow directly in his father’s footsteps; after all, John would have the young lad perform for the likes of Paul McCartney, Paul Rodgers, Jeff Beck and more when Jason was only five-years-old! At 17, he was the drummer for Air Race and had a record deal with Atlantic Records. The group recorded one album and opened for big name groups like Queen, Meat Loaf, Ted Nugent, and even AC/DC!
John Bonham’s death in 1980 left a huge hole in the Led Zeppelin lineup, but thankfully, Jason has been there to save the day! In 1988, he played drums with Robert Plant, Jimmy Page, and John Paul Jones for Zeppelin’s first-ever televised reunion. Jason even toured with Page and recorded the album Outrider with him. In 1990, Jason completed his first solo album, The Disregard of Timekeeping, with one of the tracks, “Wait For You,” earning him a gold record. His second album, Mad Hatter, followed in 1992. In 1993, Jason teamed up with greats like Paul Rodgers, Slash, David Gilmour, Jeff Beck, and more to record a Muddy Waters tribute album, which earned a Grammy nomination. He reunited with Rodgers and Slash the next year at Woodstock II. In 1995, when Led Zeppelin was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, Jason was there to accept on behalf of his father and also to perform with his old bandmates.
On December 10th, 2007, Jason jumped back into his father’s shoes when Led Zeppelin reunited at London’s O2 arena! The performance was recorded and released in 2012 as Celebration Day. Nowadays, he can be seen drumming for Sammy Hagar’s new group, The Circle!
