Tomorrow’s Program Advises Elderly Citizens to “Just Hang Up” – Tuesday, March 12 at 8:00 p.m. ET

DALLAS (March 11, 2012) – On the eve of hearings to be held Wednesday in Washington, D.C. by the Senate Select Committee on Aging, tomorrow night’s “Dan Rather Reports” will devote the entire hour to a topic that is very close to the heart of many Americans – protecting some of our most vulnerable seniors from losing everything they have to fraud and deception.

And, the scam that has bilked American seniors out of hundreds of millions is perpetuated in the form of a simple telephone call, or a piece of mail, letting you know that it’s your lucky day…you’ve won the lottery! All you need to do is send the caller a few small fees and the money is yours. But, you’ll never see the money. Through incremental and persistent request for more and more money, these con artists squeeze their victims out of money they don’t have – all the while promising the prize winnings are just around the corner.

Rather and his team traveled to Jamaica where these con artists have built a thriving, organized crime network set up to prey on unsuspecting Americans. While investigating this story, an elite Jamaican police task force drove us around Montego Bay, the epicenter for lottery fraud. Along the way, Dan Rather questions a man police say is a scammer. The man denies the claim.

Dan Rather: “If you were , I’d have no respect for that.”

While Federal Trade Commission statistics say that over 90% of these victims never come forward, since a story about our report was featured online, we have heard from countless seniors and their families who have fallen victim to this scam. We will present some of their heartbreaking stories tomorrow night, and, ways to help protect you and those you love from these cunning cons.

“Dan Rather Reports: Just Hang Up” premieres Tuesday, March 12 at 8:00 p.m. ET with an encore at 11:00 p.m. ET.
