DALLAS (October 29, 2012) Back in 1903, Milton Hershey built more than just a chocolate factory, he built an American dream.
In the hills of Dauphin County, PA, Mr. Hershey literally built an entire town for his workers, a virtual Utopia including homes, schools, a stadium, a department store and more. This humble man created both a booming chocolate empire and a model factory town where middle class families were able to grow and thrive for the last 100 years.
But changes to the economic landscape have not skipped over the American icon that is Hershey.
With jobs moving to Mexico and the swirl of scandal over foreign student labor, today “the sweetest place on earth” is also a window into the debates gripping the nation about the fading of America’s middle class.
Tune in tonight to “Dan Rather Reports” for more on how the story of Hershey is merely a reflection of the new global economy, and how it’s having a devastating effect on American manufacturing jobs.
“Dan Rather Reports: How Sweet It Was” airs TONIGHT, October 30th at 8:00 p.m. ET/5:00 p.m. PT only on AXS TV.
