The war on abortion is creating unexpected casualties – TONIGHT on AXS TV – April 9 at 8:00pmET

DALLAS – April 9, 2013 The state of Texas has recently become a leading front in the war on abortion and their Governor, Rick Perry, has signed a string of new pro-life legislation ranging from parental notification to a law requiring a mandatory sonogram for anyone choosing to have an abortion.

And while these actions have drawn cheers from the pro-life movement, there are hidden casualties in this war – poor women in the state of Texas.

For years, Texas has prohibited state funding for abortions. However, the state did reimburse healthcare providers for basic services such as pap smears, contraception and basic preventative care as part of the Texas Women’s Health program.

Planned Parenthood, a large provider of these services has become a major target of anti-abortion leaders in the state – losing funding to the tune of 60 million dollars due to the fact that they also provide pregnancy termination services.

And, after Texas adopted a policy to exclude Planned Parenthood and its affiliates from the Texas Women’s Health program, Federal dollars were pulled in 2012 … and affordable clinics for women began closing all across the state.

And while many, including Governor Perry believe that protecting the rights of abortion providers and protecting women’s health are not the same thing, the changes in Texas are starting to show a different story.

“Where does that leave people?” asks Ann Cass, a community leader and head of a self help housing group in Hidalgo County, Texas when asked about the myriad of clinics closing in low income areas. “That leaves people searching, wondering, ‘Well, where do I go? Where do I go now? Where do I go for help?’ And there’s no place for them to go for help.”
