DALLAS (September 17, 2012) – What started out as the innocent practice of releasing an unwanted house pet into wild is now threatening to destroy the already fragile ecosystem of one of the nation’s most majestic national parks.
Tomorrow night, “Dan Rather Reports” travels to Everglades National Park to investigate the infestation of the Burmese Python. These snakes, a threatened species in Asia, are attractive pets to some, but when they grow to their full size – sometimes over 20 feet long – they can overwhelm a household. And, what may have began as a few people releasing a single snake into the park has now become a population of an estimated 100,000 snakes – and in some cases, these pythons are depleting the park of indigenous species to the tune of 90% or more.
The program also features exclusive footage of a python being locate d and captured near the Everglades:
Tune in Tuesday as Rather and his team uncover some of the unique methods being used to track and control the python population before irreparable damage is done.
“Dan Rather Reports” airs Tuesday, September 18th at 8:00 p.m. ET/5:00 p.m. PT only on AXS TV.
