DALLAS (January 29, 2013) When Boeing introduced the new 787 also known as “The Dreamliner,” the aviation industry and passengers alike were anxious to experience all of the bells and whistles this new aircraft promised to provide – a much improved flight experience for consumers while flying with a 20% reduction in fuel.
Back in 2007 we brought you a story about early concerns with the Dreamliner. At that time, the main concern of those with intimate knowledge of the aircraft was that the new composite plastics used in building the 787’s fuselage could not sustain a crash, essentially shattering into tiny pieces upon impact.
But now the issues are with the plane’s lithium ion battery system. Two recent near disasters – in which the batteries caught fire – have caused the Federal Aviation Administration to make an almost unprecedented move. The FAA grounded the entire Dreamliner fleet.
Tune in tonight as Rather and his team re-investigate the Dreamliner and what the next step is for Boeing’s troubled 787.
“Dan Rather Reports: Grounded” airs TONIGHT, Tuesday, January 29 at 8:00 p.m. ET/5:00 p.m. PT only on AXS TV.
