How the Dutch and the Swedes have created two very different approaches to eliminating abuses in “the World’s Oldest Profession” – TONIGHT – Tuesday, January 22 at 8:00pm ET

DALLAS (January 22nd, 2013) The controversial subject of prostitution poses a dilemma to just about every country in the world – not just the United States. And, tonight “Dan Rather Reports” travels to Europe to take a look at how two countries there have taken completely different approaches to controlling prostitution and ending human sex trafficking.

In 2000, the Netherlands became one of the first countries in the world to legalize and regulate prostitution, believing that the move would help remove the stigma of being a sex worker and would ultimately make the job safer for the women involved.

About the same time, in 1999, Sweden became the first country in the world to make selling sex legal but buying it illegal. In Sweden all prostitutes are considered victims and all law enforcement efforts are focused on the buyers or so-called “johns.” Their goal is to eliminate demand and by doing so, eliminate prostitution.

“The Dutch government said we will have legal prostitution and we will have the possibility to check this up and control it,” said Patrik Cederlof, Sweden’s National Coordinator against prostitution. “In Sweden we say it is not okay. We don’t think it’s a good thing. We think it’s a question of gender equality and violence against women.”

Tune in tonight as Rather and his team investigate how after more than 10 years the Dutch Model and the Swedish Model are working and what lessons there might be for America.

“Dan Rather Reports: The Swedish Model” airs TONIGHT, Tuesday, January 22nd at 8:00 p.m. ET/5:00 p.m. PT only on AXS TV.
