How much are the politics on Capitol Hill hurting our chances at affordable health care for all? – Tuesday, February 14 at 8:00 p.m. ET

DALLAS (February 13, 2012) – Tomorrow night’s “Dan Rather Reports” will feature an in-depth discussion with Dr. Donald Berwick, the former Administrator of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, or CMS.

In 2010 when President Obama nominated Berwick to lead CMS and help implement the new healthcare bill, the medical community applauded the choice. But just 16 months after Berwick took office, he was forced to resign, after he became swept up in the controversy over the Affordable Care Act.

Some see the Affordable Care Act, or “Obamacare” as the President’s biggest vulnerability in this election year, but Berwick tells Rather that our country had better come to grips with our health care crisis, and that this much maligned bill may be the solution.

“It’s a step toward justice and coverage in our country,” said Berwick. “It also is a law about quality. I mean, if I were President Obama, I’d be proud to have it called ‘Obamacare.’ It’s a great step forward for the country.”

But, Berwick, a mild mannered pediatrician who founded the world-renowned Institute for Healthcare Improvement, ran into stiff opposition and fierce criticism shortly after his appointment. His Republican opponents claimed he did not support American ideals, calling him a “rationer,” and proponent of socialized medicine.

Berwick tells Rather about the nasty politics he was confronted with in this clip from Tuesday’s broadcast:

“Dan Rather Reports” premieres on HDNet, Tuesday, February 14 at 8:00 p.m. ET with an encore at 11:00 p.m. ET.
