FOUR TIME EMMY®-NOMINEE AND GRAMMY®-WINNER PAUL SHAFFER RECALLS CO-WRITING THE DISCO HIT ‘IT’S RAINING MEN’ AND THE STRUGGLE TO GET IT RECORDED IN THIS LOOK AT A NEW EPISODE OF THE BIG INTERVIEW, AIRING JUNE 18 AT 8pE/5pP
Los Angeles (June 12, 2019) – GRAMMY®-winning musician, composer, author, EMMY®-nominated television personality, and radio host Paul Shaffer sits down with Dan Rather at the world-renowned Blue Note Jazz Club in Manhattan in an all-new episode of The Big Interview—airing Tuesday, June 18 at 8pE/5pP. During the evening, Shaffer reflects on his unparalleled journey in entertainment, explaining what drove him to leave college to pursue a career in music, sharing priceless anecdotes from his time working with comedy trailblazers Gilda Radner, Dan Aykroyd, and John Belushi as a featured performer and member of Saturday Night Live’s original house band, and shedding light on how he came to be David Letterman’s bandleader and sidekick for a record-shattering 33 years.
In this exclusive first look, Shaffer describes co-writing the smash Disco hit “It’s Raining Men” with Academy Award®, Golden Globe®, and Grammy® winning songwriter Paul Jabara. Shaffer: “He calls me up and he says, ‘I loved working with you, let’s write one together. I’ve got a title for Donna Summer that’s gonna bring her back. What do you think about this title: ‘It’s Raining Men’?’ I said, ‘I’ll be right over’,” Shaffer recalls. “He had the ideas, and I put them to music.”
Summer was less than impressed, however, leaving Jabara searching for someone else to bring the song to life. “He knew all of the great divas of the time,” Shaffer continues. “Barbra… Patti La Belle… Cher, and all of them hated it.” Convinced the song was destined to be a hit, Jabara resolved to create his own group with vocalists Martha Wash and Izora Armstead who were then performing as Two Tons of Fun. “He put their voices on it and it became a global number one dance record,” Shaffer explains. “So, they became The Weather Girls… and they went on the road and the rest is Disco history.” Watch it here.
When Shaffer isn’t collaborating with the biggest names in music, he’s welcoming them into his studio as guests on his hit SiriusXM radio show Paul Shaffer Plus One. The program—which will be making its television network debut as a new weekly series on AXS TV this September—finds the multi-talented musician sitting down for intimate jam sessions and candid conversations with his close friends and fellow music icons, as they discuss their careers, influences, and experiences in the music industry. Featured guests include fan-favorite frontman Sammy Hagar, Hollies/CSN/CSNY legend Graham Nash, ZZ Top’s Billy Gibbons, blues trailblazer Buddy Guy, Steely Dan co-founder Donald Fagen, the Eagles’ Joe Walsh, and Motown giant Smokey Robinson, among many others.
