Was one man guilty of espionage, or was he framed in the sake of national security? – Tuesday, February 21 at 8:00 p.m. ET

DALLAS (February 20, 2012) – Tomorrow night’s “Dan Rather Reports” takes a look at a controversial case in which one man, Noshir Gowadia, a former engineer who helped design the propulsion system for the B-2, or “Stealth,” bomber has been convicted of selling classified technology to the Chinese and is currently serving a 32-year sentence in a Super Max prison.

Some say that Gowadia was wrongly convicted. That when examining the evidence, the technology he was supposed to have sold is actually unclassified, irrelevant to the design process of the B2 bomber. In his defense, Gowadia claimed only to have been paid $110,000 by the Chinese to teach the basic physics of jet propulsion at the University of Beijing.

“If it were his intention to commit espionage, knowing that he has information that would be worth tens of millions, hundreds of millions of dollars, why would he risk everything for $100,000,” asked Gowadia’s son Ashton. “It makes no sense.”

The U.S. Government, however, paints a compelling picture of Gowadia’s suspicious activity: missing passport stamps, email aliases, foreign bank accounts , money laundering, encrypted databases and even a fifty page signed statement written during the initial interrogation in which Gowadia admitted wrongdoing – he now claims that this statement was coerced.

But those who defend Gowadia believe that if he is guilty of anything, it is for traveling to China with information that required a special license which he did not have. Any scientist working in the technology field knows that this type of activity is punishable by a prison sentence.

But did this error mean that Gowadia actually provided the Chinese with information that could threaten U.S. security?

In the clip below, Rather speaks with Robert Skulsky, former manager in the special projects division of the B-2 program:
