Earlier this year, the Japanese-based DREAM organization kicked off an eight-man Japan bantamweight grand prix to determine the country’s top 135-pound fighter.
The first two rounds of the tournament took place in May, and the finale was held two months later.
In this week’s edition of HDNet Fights Video Vault, we look back at one of the tournament’s semifinal matchups: Masakazu Imanari vs. Kenji Osawa.
Each week HDNet and MMAjunkie.com release a new and exclusive fight from the ever-growing HDNet Fights video library. Stunning knockouts, slick submissions, shocking finishes and legendary brawls are the norm for this weekly feature.
Imanari vs. Osawa is no exception.
The entertaining and technical scrap pitted Imanari (22-8-2 at the time), a reigning DEEP champion on a 6-1 run, against Osawa (17-9-2), a WEC vet who eventually signed with DREAM and won his first two fights.
So which vet would punch his ticket to the finals?
Check out the embedded clip for the answer.
And don’t forget to tune in to this week’s HDNet debut of the “DREAM: Japan GP Finale” event. The show took place this past month and now makes its North American TV debut on Friday at 10 p.m. ET. The star-studded show features the finale of the grand-prix tournament.
