The news this morning was sad. It was also angry, annoying, disappointing, regrettable, and worst of all not shocking.
Jon Jones is in trouble again. Hours before the marquee UFC 200 he is off the card, the landmark card, the one that was his chance at a truly glorious return.
No specifics yet but enough familiar words: Failed test. Banned substance.
Jones, the interim belt holder, was going to take on light heavyweight champ Daniel Cormier in a unification bout.
It mattered to the fans, to Cormier, to the UFC. It mattered to all except Jones it appears.
Sure, a man is innocent till proven guilty, but there is history that could shed some light. Jones was tested out of competition June 16 and failed according to The World Anti-Doping Association. When that info was passed along to the Nevada Athletic Commission he was off the card.
Ironic that Jones defeated Cormier at UFC 182, January 2015 and it was announced later traces of cocaine were discovered in his system, but it wasn’t banned in out-of-competition rules by WADA so the fight couldn’t be stopped.
Most know the rest including eventually being stripped of his title after another run in with the law outside the cage.
The second chances are now turning into the third and fourth for Jones. Undoubetly one of the greatest fighters ever, but growing doubt over his sincerity, dedication, and attitude.
Being under the scrunity he is, and should be, Jones had to know there would be out of competition screenings. He had to know he would literally and figuratively be under the microscope.
That’s the point. Jones is a smart man. A man who either doesn’t care anymore or needs more help than he’ll admit, because at some point, fast approaching, no one is going to care any longer.
