Things to consider:
Who has missed the most cell phone calls, Tom Brady or Lindsey Graham?
If defending the title is tougher than winning it, UFC bantamweight champ T.J. Dillashaw isn’t buying it. He TKO’d Renan Barao in the 4th round of their rematch after doing the same in the 5th round when he upset the Brazilian to take the belt.
American Pharaoh, the first Triple Crown winner in 37 years, is a huge favorite to win the Haskell Sunday before a crowd expected to be close to a record 60,000 for the NBC telecast. Two legs or four, everyone loves a winner.
Alex Rodriguez is on the way to adding another trophy, Comeback Player of the Year. If comeback includes suspension time off.
Never get political, vote how you choose, but Donald Trump does have that UFC type bravado that has him atop early Republican polls. In the ad nauseam PC world, shaking it up sometimes is just fun to watch.
To wit, the best sports line of the year comes from UFC Queen Ronda Rousey telling FOX Sports her future plan after she fights Beth Correira. “I will beat up Beth, then I’m going to take a couple of weeks to rest and then I’m going to go beat up Miesha (Tate), and then I’m going to go to Thailand or wherever we decide to film and prep for a month, and then start filming for like eight to 10 weeks, and then go beat up the next chick.’
No retreat, no surrender.
Tate is the only one to get out of the first round against Rousey and until Cris Cyborg makes 135 pounds, there just aren’t any intriguing match ups outside of Rousey-Tate III. Yes, the assumption is Ronda wins this weekend.
Speaking at a Thoroughbred Farm Managers meeting the other day, more than one transplanted Irishman (horse racing is a well-respected profession in the country) came up to tell me their joy of watching Conor McGregor win the UFC featherweight crown. Proving two things: Never underestimate national pride and sports fans appreciate bold and successful athletes.
Best marketing of any sport anywhere in recent years is the NBA Summer League which now attracts thousands to Las Vegas to watch rookies, free agents, and those wanting another chance. There used to be random locations and teams scattered but the NBA has honed it into a a destination point and given their NBATV some much needed programming to escape months of re-running old games.
Wouldn’t it be something if Reebok works out a deal with Jacob “Stitch” Duran down the road? Stranger things have happened. The legendary cutman hasn’t missed a beat since being let go by the UFC, working the Premiere Boxing Champs event last week in Vegas and the World Series of Fighting show this week. Stitch’s popularity is at an all time high. Well deserved for one of the best ever.
The mark of greatness could be when all your misses are so scrutinized and all the talk is about the magical past. Sound familiar Tiger Woods?
Doesn’t everyone want Jeff Gordon to win one more big race?
How long before Jon Jones really opens up about past mistakes and future plans?
Wonder if Georges St. Pierre enjoys the guessing of when he’ll return to the octagon?
Can’t wait for Guardians of the Galaxy 2.
