MARLOES COENEN SAYS SHE’LL DEFEND TITLE AGAINST TATE BEFORE YEAR END
Strikeforce Welterweight Women’s Champ Marloes Coenen told HDNet on Inside MMA that her next title defense will be against Miesha Tate before the year ends.
“I don’t know the time and place but I know it will be against Miesha sometime this year. It makes sense and I look forward to another title defense. She is a strong opponent.”
Tate won the Strikeforce Welterweight tournament. Since taking the title against Sarah Kaufman on October 9, 2010, Coenen is coming off a tough but successful defense against Liz Carmouche on March 5. “It was much tougher than I expected, it has made me trainer harder to fight Miesha.”
Coenen also says she looks forward to another shot at Cristiane “Cyborg” Santos, widely considered the world’s top female MMA fighter. Santos impressively defended her Strikeforce Middleweight crown against Coenen in January, 2010.
“I learned a lot from that fight. In time I hope to fight her again, maybe a catch weight or something. But that’s down the road. Right now my plan is to defend my title against Miesha Tate in the very near future.”
There is no word yet from Strikeforce confirming the bout.
