The Road To The G1 Supercard in MSG Concludes Friday

This Friday We find Out Who Faces Jay White for the IWGP Heavyweight Championship

Thirty-two men have entered the New Japan Cup this year for not only the bragging rights to be declared the winner of the largest edition of this tournament but also for the added bonus of getting a shot at “Switchblade” Jay White’s IWGP Heavyweight Title at the hallowed grounds of Madison Square Garden. The competition has never been so fierce and this Friday we find out who will get that golden opportunity.

The winner of last year’s tournament, Zack Sabre Jr., has remained undefeated in this annual event. He enters the quarter-finals with a boosted ego as he had successfully made EVIL and Kota Ibushi tap out to some of his innovative submission maneuvers. He is looking to do that again to Hiroshi Tanahashi. The “Ace of New Japan”, unfortunately, was forced to submit earlier this year to the man he lost the title to Jay White. When up against the wall, Tanahashi has been known to perform impressive feats. Can he pull out a miracle and advance to the semi-finals and more importantly win back the championship?

In perhaps the most bizarre matchup of the entire New Japan Cup, SANADA will face off with Colt “BOOM BOOM” Cabana. SANADA is known for his hard-hitting blows and is viewed as the future of professional wrestling. The same can’t be said for Colt Cabana, but he causes a bit of confusion with his opponents due to his most unorthodox move-set. He is a former NWA Worlds Heavyweight Champion. To be that much closer to main eventing Madison Square Garden would make this Chicago native’s long wrestling journey nearly complete.

Rounding out the quarter-finals are all matches containing members from the CHAOS stable: Tomohiro Ishii vs. YOSHI-HASHI and Kazuchika Okada vs. Will Ospreay. Each one of these men wants – the cup, the title shot, and revenge against Jay White. “Switchblade” was formally in CHAOS but together with GEDO they turned their backs on their fellow stable mates and aligned themselves with the popular renegade group, the Bullet Club.

The last three rounds of the New Japan Cup 2019 will be underway in a special 3-Hour episode! Who will be the 2019 New Japan Cup Winner? Who will fight “Switchblade” Jay White for the 10 pounds of gold in front of a sold-out show in New York City? TUNE IN FRIDAY 8/7c!
